If you’re like us and go wild for the world’s natural wonders, you’ll know there are few experiences as exciting and moving as witnessing the life cycle of sea turtles. Along Western Australia’s north coast, from October through early April, multiple species of these incredible ocean dwellers make themselves at home in the shallows and on pristine shorelines to carry on their species.
Most travellers seeking to witness this spectacle make their way to the famed Ningaloo coast near Exmouth, where turtles are a welcome and beloved sight during summer. But for those who crave something rarer — an encounter uninterrupted by crowds, set against a wilderness that feels untouched — the Montebello Islands offer something truly extraordinary. A Montebello Island Journey aboard Eclipse can you take you to witness this incredible act of nature in a safe and sustainable manner. Read on to find out more about the spectacle and we can take you to experience it.

A Hidden Haven off the Pilbara Coast
Found more than 130 kilometres off the north coast of Western Australia, the Montebello Islands are a remote archipelago of limestone shores, turquoise shallows and coral-fringed lagoons. Here, the sense of isolation is total, the shallow waters surrounding the islands are calm and clear, the drift of a turtle’s flipper or the shimmer of sunlight across a glassy bay causing one of the only movements.
This is no ordinary nesting site. The Montebellos are a vital ecological sanctuary for four of the world’s seven marine turtle species: the flatback, green, loggerhead, and the critically endangered hawksbill. That’s more than half of all turtle species, gathered in one remarkable island chain right here on our doorstep.
Along the western edge of the archipelago, from North West to Trimouille Island, breeding aggregations form each summer. Female turtles rest and refuel in the lagoons between laying clutches of eggs, while males linger in the shallows, their courtship rituals unfolding just beneath the surface.

The Magic of Mating Season
The mating season begins in October, when the shallows come alive with the activity of countless turtles. Male turtles can be seen circling, gently nuzzling a potential mate’s head or flippers to gain her attention. If she accepts, he clasps her shell with his curved claws and they drift together in an elegant, timeless dance — the beginning of another generation.
By December, the females haul themselves up the beach to dig their nests, often under the cover of night. Each nest holds up to a hundred eggs, carefully buried above the tide line. Sixty days later, the sand stirs again as tiny hatchlings emerge, instinctively guided by the moonlight toward the sea.
It’s a cycle as old as the ocean itself — a fragile, miraculous rhythm that continues only when left undisturbed.

Why the Montebellos Matter
The Montebello Islands Marine Park is recognised as one of Australia’s most significant habitats for marine turtles. The Western Australian hawksbill population found here, in particular, is the largest remaining in the Indian Ocean. Critical inter-nesting zones have been designated along the western shelf, ensuring this precious cycle is protected for future generations.
Unlike mainland beaches such as Cable Beach or Ningaloo Reef, the Montebellos remain largely inaccessible without a private vessel. This isolation is what makes them so ecologically valuable — and so profoundly moving to experience. To stand on those pristine shores, surrounded by nothing but sea, sky and the gentle rhythm of turtle life, is to glimpse nature at its most elemental.

Witnessing It Responsibly
At Eclipse Expeditions, our guides are deeply versed in the ecosystems of the north-west. We know how to approach these fragile habitats with respect — from keeping safe distances to ensuring our vessels remain clear of shallow mating zones. Guests can witness this remarkable phenomenon in comfort and seclusion, guided by crew who understand that true luxury lies in connection, not intrusion.
In October / November and March / April, Eclipse’s Montebello voyages offer a rare opportunity to see this annual ritual unfold in one of the world’s most pristine marine sanctuaries.
